Reiki (‘ray-key’) is a complementary healing therapy, founded by Mikao Usui in Japan in the early part of the 20th century. It is a gentle and effective system which activates the body’s natural self-healing abilities, and so can benefit everyone, from young babies to adults in a safe, non-invasive way.
The name Reiki originates from the Japanese words ‘rei’ meaning ‘universal’ and ‘ki’ meaning ‘energy’. This universal energy is channeled through the practitioner to the recipient and works on all levels of the mind, body, emotion and spirit, allowing for total harmony and balance to be restored. Energy therapies have been around for thousands of years, and are well respected across the globe in a huge number of guises, from acupuncture and EFT to Tai Chi and Yoga, as well as Reiki.
Reiki can also promote self-development, therefore allowing you to be at your optimum to deal with all aspects of life.
Treatments with Reiki energy reduce stress within the body, thereby inducing a state of relaxation; the body can then be allowed to begin the healing process. It is an extremely relaxing experience and the benefits can be immediate. All diseases and ailments can be helped with Reiki and it is safe to use in conjunction with other complementary therapies and conventional medical treatments.
Reiki produces a feeling of total wellbeing and this has a very positive effect on the immune system.
It has become widely recognised by conventional doctors and consultants, resulting in some hospitals inviting Reiki practitioners to work alongside doctors to help their patients.
Reiki and Stress Reduction
One of Reiki’s huge benefits is to significantly reduce stress and anxiety, thereby inducing a state of relaxation. While stress is not considered an illness, when it is suffered for a prolonged period of time the body can be affected both physically and mentally, as it weakens the immune system.
Reiki treatments provide an opportunity for you to totally relax and rebalance, in a safe and caring environment. In addition, Reiki helps the body to reach an inner state of harmony on all levels; physically, mentally and spiritually.
Who are Reiki Treatments suitable for?
As a natural healing system, Reiki treatments are suitable for all. Reiki can be administered on a treatment couch or sitting in a chair, and is fantastic for everyone; from those just wanting to de-stress to those suffering greatly from an illness or injury. There are no known contra-indications to receiving a Reiki treatment, and so it is suitable even for those undergoing medical treatment – I am more than happy to work alongside your doctor or consultant, respecting any medical regime you may currently be following.
Reiki can also be used as a preventative treatment, helping to keep your body, mind and emotions in balance.
How is a Reiki Treatment carried out?
I will invite you to close your eyes and begin to relax into the experience. There will be soothing music playing softly in the background and the room will be softly lit, to enhance the experience.
The Reiki energy will now be flowing through my hands and I will begin to place my hands over the energy points on your body, sometimes very lightly touching you and other times keeping my hands just above your body.
Reiki treatments are non-intrusive; therefore you will feel comfortable at all times throughout the treatment. At each energy point, my hands will remain still for a few minutes and you may feel heat or cold coming from my hands, which is a very calming and soothing feeling.
What might I feel or experience during a Reiki Treatment?
Each person experiences Reiki differently, although all agree it provides a wonderful feeling of relaxation, balance and wellbeing. Most people feel warmth coming from the practitioner’s hands over certain areas of their body, although on some occasions, the energy may also feel cold. Other people feel no sensation at all – reiki energy will work whether someone has a sensation or not. Whilst receiving the treatment, emotions may be gently released, as the energy clears any blockages that may have been present. It will always be a gentle and rejuvenating experience.
What might I feel after a Reiki Treatment?
The majority of people feel very relaxed after a Reiki treatment, with the addition of feeling more in balance. Most people remain relaxed for several hours, although others may feel absolutely full of renewed energy – the benefits of a Reiki treatment are numerous and always positive.
